I have mixed feelings about this novel. I enjoyed the story, and the two sub-stories, as the time shifted from present to past and back again. Very nice writing and an engaging tale - nice love story without being sappy. I think the problem comes in with a middle of the book that is just too long. I found myself skimming at times and wondering where the story was going. It's really too bad the volume of words pulls the book down. There were points at the beginning (view spoiler)

The premise to this story is that our main character, Eva, returns to her childhood vacation place to scatter the ashes of her sister to a place "where she was always happy".
Leaving behind her life in LA, Eva is reunited with friends of her childhood at Trelowarth House on the Cornish coast. Upon arriving at the house, strange things begin to happen and Eva thinks that she is slowly losing her mind because of the grief she is dealing with over the recent loss of her sister.

Another engaging tale from Kearsley, who is leading a revival of the old gothic tradition that's been languishing in obscurity since the 70s. I especially like in this one how she ties up her time-travel thread; it's a surprisingly elegant solution.
