12/20/16: Just finished reading this aloud to my second 9-year-old, and it was just as good as the first time. This book/series will forever remain on my must-read list for middle grade students.

Have I mentioned that I love historical fiction? Tee, hee. I have wanted to read Chains for quite some time and finally got it done. I loved every minute of it. It takes place in NYC at the outset of the Revolutionary War. The main character, Isabel is a young slave girl. Her character was believable which is sometimes not the case in YA novels. She was both frightened by her situation and brave when she needed to be. It ends with a cliffhanger so it's off to read the sequel, Forge.

Meh. I thought this was a little too didactic (maybe because it's aimed at a younger crowd?). Some things didn't feel very realistic either (not the factually accurate events, but Sal's decisions, her accent and her reading habits) - which is an important consideration because this is historical fiction!
