In the hands of a truly gifted writer, this book could have been something good. In the hands of Jonathan Barnes, it was a muddled, messy collection of random ideas. He was trying too hard for shock value and not trying hard enough on story line, character development, dialogue, and all of the other stuff that makes a book a good read and a fun adventure. A good mysterious romp. The blurbs for it claimed that it was similar to Neil Gaiman and Clive Barker; I must agree. Although not as masterful as either of the above, it has wonderfully similar elements. Very Victorian and slightly steampunk, Barnes never quite gives you enough information to satisfy - only to tantalize. This book was fun to read, and ripe for imaginative "fill in the blanks."
