Hurston was a fantastic story teller, and the first section of this book reads like a novel, with a lot of similarities to the story in Their Eyes Were Watching God.
When she gets to the part of her life where she went back to high school and then on to college, it gets a bit bloated with the name dropping, and she is extremely careful to praise the people she thinks need to be praised, clearly aware that these people will read her words.
