Inspector Salvo Montalbano utterly forgets his plans with his long-time girlfriend Livia when his Sergeant, Guiseppe Fazio, disappears and leaves her angrily waiting with no explanation. Salvo doggedly searches for the missing Fazio and investigates the reason for his abduction and attempted murder in the infamous mafia body disposal pits.
The plot is rather mundane, but Inspector Montalbano makes up for it. What a delightful character.
