Compelling and finely tuned, with a narrative force that pushes you forward even as you yearn to slow down to avoid what you know is coming. A powerful story that draws some uneasy parallels to our recently concluded election, despite having been published a few years before, and a must-read for any student of the era.

Despite the fact that I think I blame the swastika on the cover for getting me embroiled in a fight with a crazy racist man at Starbucks, I really enjoyed this book. I had never read any Philip Roth, but I liked the voice in this book and although I've heard complaints about the plot in this book, I found it fast-paced and very exciting to read. I was so caught up in the book that I actually didn't want to leave the house to go to work in the mornings.

The premise is a good one--and very scarily plausible--but I couldn't stomach the feeling of unease and dread, so I bailed. Maybe another time.
