If I could give this book 6 stars, I would. It is a wonderful story of hope and redemption, tragedy and triumph, and most of all, the highs and lows of life in West Virginia mining country just after World War I. It is great historical fiction. It makes the reader feel the reality of what people experienced in that time period, and shows just what they were up against when the mine owners closed the mines, the Depression hit, and people had to scrabble out a living in the hardest of places and t ...more
