What Members Thought

The power of this story is that it takes you to another world than our modern day, first world lives. A world where mothers have eight children and that's not really a large family. A world where fathers slap mothers around, and their children, too, if they wish. A world where young children just wear shirts and go where they will. A world where a mother can defy a doctor and refuse to go with her 1 1/2 pound premie baby to the hospital. And it wasn't that long ago.

Loved this book! I discovered this show on netflix and think it's totally something people need to check out. So much better than most of what is on tv! This show is on PBS. Season 3 starts somete this spring. The books are awesome because they get into even more detail than the show. I'm excited for book 2 and 3! It's the memoirs of a British midwife in the 1950's. Love it!

Loved reading about the energetic sisters, their life in the convent and their stories of the East Enders they worked with.

What a great book to read.
I love the author's ability to be frank and clear, while weaving her memories into a story. I love that each chapter is a section to itself - which makes it easy to pick up and put down without getting lost.
Her ability to really capture the time period and the language is wonderful!
This is a wonderful memoir to read and I highly recommend it.
PS. I also recommend the BBC TV series. They do a great job of capturing this memoir. ...more
