I enjoyed this book and there were a lot of nice moments in it but I felt there was something missing here, like there's another book in the author that she really wants to write.
As interesting as the setting and character set up were, there was something flat about the characters themselves. In several places, I just didn't believe they would have behaved the way they did - or else the reasons for the behavior were not at all clear.
I think this would be an excellent movie, though. Maybe better ...more

Caren Gray manages a plantation, where her mother used to work. Caren lives on the plantation with her 9 year old daughter. One day the landscaper finds the body of a migrant worker from a nearby by sugar cane farm in a shallow grave on the plantation. Caren becomes involved in the investigation when she becomes convinced the police are investigating the wrong suspect. The mystery part of the story is very slow moving.
