Read this back in 1992, I think, and passages from it still pop into my head from time to time.
This woman's family reminds me of Jeanette Wall's yet both women seemed to draw strength from difficult circumstances.

The sort of confessional and breezy book that would have been blog-to-book in a later era, and Karr is definitely the prototype for the modern memoir of a troubled childhood. But what sells this one is that underneath the devil-may-care language, Karr's telling you something true about what it means to love, and be loved, by people who are somewhat too damaged themselves to get it right.

I loved this memoir. Despite so much pain, it had me laughing out loud in public. Other moments it had me crying, in spite of (or maybe because of) its irreverence.
