The sort of confessional and breezy book that would have been blog-to-book in a later era, and Karr is definitely the prototype for the modern memoir of a troubled childhood. But what sells this one is that underneath the devil-may-care language, Karr's telling you something true about what it means to love, and be loved, by people who are somewhat too damaged themselves to get it right.
