Crossing is more of a 3.5 for me. I really appreciate the author's contrasting perceptions of being a minority (Xiang versus Naomi) in a mostly all-white high school. Xiang's social and emotional angst reads true for all high schoolers while also including several deeper layers of tragedy.

I found the setting to be ambiguous and conflicting. Chinatown? Forests? Bicycling through snow? Darkneess by after school hours? Maybe I'm not just not familiar with wooded lands that are within commute to NY
