This book was really something. Not only does it share the stunningly emotional story of the relationship between Sophie and the two men who love her - providing a brilliant plot that keeps the pages turning - but Styron finds time to comment on sexuality, religion, science, North/South relations in the US, drugs, anti-Semitism and racism, Freudian psychology, and most especially the role Nazis played in World War II, and the horrors of the concentration camps they ran.
