I almost never hand out 5-star reviews, but I'm giving one to Gaiman. My great enjoyment surprises me somewhat given my tepid reaction to Neverwhere, which is often cited as the pinnacle of his work. Somehow, this is different. Maybe it's the audio format (superlative, by the way), the utterly intriguing premise of growing up graveyard, or maybe it's just that it's damn good storytelling. Everything about this book is smart: character, narrative arc, language. It's a great example of how books for children don't need to "dumb down" in any way for their readers. A classic!
