Clay Jannon is an out of work art school graduate who gets hired to be night clerk at Mr. Penumbra's 24 hour book store. The book store attracts an interesting collection of people who mainly borrow books from "the waybacklist". Out of boredom and to impress a cute girl from google Clay stumbles upon the secret behind the bookstore. A fun book with lots of enjoyable characters.

Actually, this would be 4 1/2 stars, if it existed. Robin Sloan is just a wonderful storyteller: creative and witty. This book has it all, an odd rare bookstore, that is peopled with odd rare customers, advanced technology, and a conspiracy theory. What more can you want?
This is a fun, quick read featuring an intriguing 24-hour bookstore, mysterious codes and an age-old secret society. I love how old meets the new in this novel and answers only come with a respectful balance between the two. So many today are clawing their way to a progressive future, while others have their heels dug in the sand to hold on to the past. That balance between the two is the message that feels right.
