One of the best books in this series. Wish Goodreads had a way to give a 3.5 rating option. Dave's daughter, Alafair, comes into her own. Other such series have tried to bring children more significantly into a series as they grew up - most with underwhelming results. James Lee Burke seems to pull it off. While I could guess the outcome at the end, it still had me on the edge of my seat because Burke has made me care for his characters.

To me this series just gets better and better. Burke writes with such flavor that you feel you are up close and personal with his characters and in their setting. As in most of his books, violence is always ready to erupt but for me the writing is the reason I read this series. Burke is almost poetic in his descriptions of place and of human thoughts and emotion. I read this particular book but in the past have listened to the audio versions as done by Will Patton.
