Probably 3.5 stars. Would have been 4 but for the first part of the book, which builds really slowly and wanders somewhat. The three main characters are well drawn and become very real to the reader, but I couldn't find myself overly caring about any of them, and although it was entertaining while I was reading it, it hasn't stayed with me. I almost read this book twice... a friend recommended it (and even told me some of the plot) so I got it from the library. I read about 10 pages before I realized that I had already read it a few years earlier, when the same friend recommended it the first time.
It is well written and the characters are well developed but Middlesex is still my favorite Eugenides book.
