The fact that Fallada wrote this novel in 24 days 3 weeks before his death of overdose in 1947 is astounding. I'm surprised it took until 2009 to have this saga translated and published in English. The characters, setting and sentiment of fear in this story feel authentic. Perhaps because Fallada lived during the Third Reich himself and if it weren't for his alcohol-induced mental breakdown, he probably would have been captured by the Nazis for his anti-Nazi sentiments in his novels. I found thi

This book captures the personal rebellion of a couple after losing their son in WWII. While their actions are small, they could have major consequences if discovered and the read feels the possibility of the discovery. This is not an action book so anyone looking for wartime scenes should look elsewhere. It is a slower, thoughtful novel.
