We read this book for mother-daughter book club this month. I have wanted to read this book for a while as I'd read excerpts and it shows up in the hands of my students periodically. I figured Ellary would like it as she is interested in current issues and the Taliban is definitely a current issue. Interestingly, she is reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry for school and was able to draw comparisons between the Nazis and the Taliban. I liked how this book didn't shy away from difficult issues

Parvana is a young girl living with her family in a bombed apartment building in Afghanistan. Her father is taken away by the Taliban and Parvana is forced to disguise herself as a boy in order to obtain food for her family.
It’s a compelling story which allows children who have never experienced war or hunger to see what life in other places can be like.
