This book is SUCH a delight. I'm reading it with my summer school kids and they love it. I'm hoping none of them are my students during the regular school year so I can start the year with it, because there's so much I can do with it re: questioning, inference, pulling together clues to make meaning, etc.

I remember this being one of my favorites back in elementary school, and coming back to it again decades later I'm surprised at how well the story holds up. Raskin assumes that her reader is pretty sharp, which plays perfectly for her target audience.

Combines two of my favourites: mystery and found family.
I was concerned with having too many suspects but they were diverse enough that I could differentiate them. The premise is definitely unforgettable and I've seen several movies and books borrow it.
