I'm not sure how I missed this book when I was a kid. It was published in 1978, when I was 10, so it would have been displayed in my library when I was the perfect age to read it. I think I would have enjoyed it, and I think back then, as now, I would have recognized the clues as (view spoiler). I thought it was a little unrealistic that none of the characters noticed right away. But of course I wasn't able to solve the mystery, since (view spoil ...more

I found the many characters a little taxing on my poor brain (been reading a little too much, perhaps? and having switched to a job that requires me to challenge my brain every day may not be helping?). The mystery was also not my favourite kind, because the beauty of puzzles and riddles is often totally lost on me. (That's my excuse for sucking at crossword puzzles, chess and riddles, anyhow.) I remember loving this book as a kid but didn't recall any of the story. I love the puzzley mystery, and the fiesty young girl at the center of the whodunit. But really, I read a story in the 80s featuring multiple bombs and that detail didn't stick with me?! I'm shocked. ...more

Combines two of my favourites: mystery and found family.
I was concerned with having too many suspects but they were diverse enough that I could differentiate them. The premise is definitely unforgettable and I've seen several movies and books borrow it.
The eulogy/foreword from the author's friend was so lovely and touching.
