I was surprised to enjoy this book so much;it was one of the free books through the Amazon Prime lending library so I guess I figured it wouldn't be very good. I did think it was a bit slow to start so I didn't get into it right away. I also thought the switching between periods of time was annoying at first, until the author reveals more of what is going to happen.

Interesting look at the lives of Italian immigrants in the early 1900s in New york City. I probably would have like it more if i had not read The Shoemaker's Wife - which is a much more enjoyable book about the same period in time. Elizabeth Street focused more on the hardships and terrors brought about by the Black Hand which i assume is the precursor to the mafia. Still it was a detailed description of life at that time and based on true events.
