I really wanted to give this three stars but then it had such an amazing and well written last few chapters. I guess i don't really understand or appreciate the idea of the cloistered monks with a vow of silence. There are so many more worthwhile things to do to worship God that is seems a bit self serving and dare I say useless. I listened to a few Gregorian chants and again they did not seem to me as beautiful as Ave Maria or Silent night. So right from the start I could not sympathize with th ...more

Louise Penny is so, so good. Another masterful addition to the Inspector Gamache series, this one set in a remote, claustrophobic monastery where the choir master has been murdered. Another great mystery in the Inspector Gamache series! In this story, Gamache and Beauvoir go to a secret monastery, one that has remained hidden for hundreds of years until the monks recently released a popular CD of highly acclaimed Gregorian chant. Gamache and Beauvoir face many obstacles in trying to solve the murder, not le ...more

Audiobook. Heartbreak. Rifts, splinters, thorns, pills, poison words, mushrooms, Canadian chickens, secret chambers, acoustic excellence, faith, chocolate-covered blueberries, the promise of peace, love and fear. Had to text a friend and ask if there’s hope for happy times ahead (she said yes).

I missed Three Pines and this book was quite slow in places but Louise Penny still knows how to grab you!

I like this series and find Chief Inspector Gamache an interesting character. This particular book seemed to drag just a bit for me and there seemed to be a bit too much repetition particularly when commenting on the personal feelings between Gamache and Francouer. but that is really a minor detail. not only has Louise Penny caused me to put Quebec on the short list for travel but now listening to Gregorian chants will be explored. I know that none of these comments amount to anything, it is rea ...more

Excellent! Fascinating about the chants and a good story too!

Current audio--starting mid-series accidentally again, but so far it's good.
