Small as an Elephant offers readers a young person's perspective of mental illness and abandonment from a guardian. I read this with my 13-year-old, and while Jack's will and fortitude offers hope and inspiration, we both felt such sadness and frustration at his many challenges along the way. This is a great book to share with tweens and young teens to discuss the complexities of families and mental illness.
