Liu Hulan is a police detective in China assigned to the murder of the U.S. ambassadors son. David Stark is an assistant U.S. Attorney who finds the body of a red prince in a ship carrying illegal immigrants from China. The two cases are connected and David is soon sent to China to work with Liu Hulan on the cases. The two of them have a previous history from when they worked for the same U.S. law firm. I read Dragon Bones before I read this. Wish that it had been the other way around. Getting the background on a character from the first in a series is more fun when read in order. Lisa See also has matured as a writer between Flower Net and Dragon Bones. I will pick up The Interior next.
The ultimate resolution of the murders is a little bit too grandiose to be believed, but See's insights into the ambiguity of modern China are always of interest and the relationship between Hulan and David is a winner.
