Sweet Tooth was the last 2012 book by a big author that I was looking forward to getting my hands on. The book’s summary promised an examination of the role of literature, plus spies! In the sure hands of someone like Ian McEwan, it was sure to be a hit, I thought. So the publication date couldn’t come fast enough for me.

Did it meet my expectations? Of course not. First the positive. Reading Sweet Tooth made me realize how little I knew of 1970s London and how all that was going on in the world

Moderately enjoyable novel with an unexpected twist at the ending. It brought back distant memories of an era I now only vaguely recall. Ewan's portrayal of the heroine (if she can be called that... more an anti-heroine, really) is refreshingly unsentimental. He does have an uncanny ability to inhabit his female character's heads, a trait he shares with another English novelist I admire from an earlier era, Joyce Cary. ...more

One of those where the plot synopsis is more compelling than the execution thereof. While I recognize that MacEwan's putting together something of a metacommentary on the pointlessness of the hearts-and-minds vein of spycraft, the unfortunate side effect is that it makes the story he's telling seem equally pointless. ...more
