This has a bit of an Oprah's Book Club feel to it with the pile-on of tragedy onto the protagonist, but Ellory handles the emotions deftly enough that it doesn't feel as depressing as it might otherwise. A good choice for those who like a more literary style in their mysteries and don't mind a shift away from the more typical plot-heavy focus in the genre. ...more

Beautiful prose! And in many ways a satisfying story. I can't go with 5 stars, however. This story seemed to go on and on and on, not in a good way. I definitely wanted more "why" for the killer's motives. The writing makes one forgive some of the plot shortcomings and I'm sure I'll pick up other books by Mr. Ellory. ...more
