May is a Chinese woman of the late 19th century, whose feet were bound to make her more attractive to a husband, But May esapers her fate and becomes instead a high-price prostitute in Shanghai.
This book has compelling, complex characters, along with a vivid setting and great imagery. There is some humour that alleviates the generally grim events of the story. The pain of bound feet reflects the heroine's inner pain.

i found this book in a waiting room while i was getting ready for a pre-op appointment. i originally thought i would read this book while i waited for my radiation treatments so that i wouldn't have to tlak to any of the other ladies in the holding area.

i was in and out so quickly that i ended up only reading this book at home. it's an interesting look at life from another time and another culture.
