The other year I read Shute's "What Happened to the Corbetts," which imagines the effect on a typical 1939 British town of the looming World War II. This one takes place in 1940 (it was published in 1942) and tells a story that is simultaneously fanciful and real, about an elderly Englishman vacationing in the French Alps when the Germans start their invasion of Europe. WW2...I still can't get enough of these stories! Shute writes a charming but gripping story about a 70 yr. old Englishman, attempting to return home after his vacation in France. The Nazis have suddenly arrived. Advancing quickly across the country, they create havoc for anyone trying to get out of harm's way. Travel is made even more difficult for main character John Howard, because he's escorting several young children (not his own). ...more
