Underwhelming. The story is set in the flapper era, and the language got me down after a while. I thought at one point if anyone said pos-it-ute-ly one more time I was going to throw the book away. Many of the characters (apart from Evie) felt one-dimensional to me, behaving quite predictably and became caricatures of themselves. The brooding, dark atmosphere kept on building, and when Evie went back into the house (of course she did!) there was bound to be trouble. Then, just when all seemed re ...more

The Diviners takes place in New York city during the 1920s and follows the lives of several young people with special powers who are fighting evil forces (or will be fighting evil forces in later books in series.) I thought the book spent too much time discussing all the Prohibition partying and the 1920s lingo got on my nerves after a while. The story itself wasn't bad, and Bray is a talented writer. This was long, and it started slowly, and I couldn't really like the main heroine, Evie. But slowly she grew on me, and the action picked up, and I became more and more interested. Thorn the big climax came, and it was somehow anticlimactic. Such build up, and then such a small moment. It felt unbalanced.

This was a big book, and I did enjoy it, so,I feel like it deserves a big review... But I'm not really sure what to say. I guess it would be fair to,say that I am nonplussed.

Really dumb (and I don't write that easily). The main character adds -ski to all sorts of words, apparently as representative of how 20s flappers spoke? The story is a hodgepodge of occult and religious symbolism and never really gets going. ...more

I would have given this one 5 *'s --- it's an interesting, well-told story --- but for the last 30 pages. The last 30 pages were pure and total setup for the sequel, introducing new elements, partially explaining old elements, and telling the reader: if you want to know how these plot elements resolve, READ THE SEQUEL! *annoyance* This was unnecessary. I would have read the sequel anyways.

I think that before I tackle the second one I may have to re-read this. There's a lot going on in this book!

2016: Reread and actually read instead of listening to the audio. Enjoyed it much more this way!
