I loved this book. Such rich characters, particularly the brash, unconventional heroine Harriet, equal parts alienated and deeply connected to those she loved. It started slowly but had a truly thrilling ending.
The only reason it doesn't get a 5 is that it uses queer pejoratively at least half a dozen times. It's written about a time when that was common usage, but it still feels unnecessary and harsh. ...more

My least favorite of all Tartt's books. I learned way too much about not so friendly families living in the southern US.

Trust me when I say that there's a reason why you'd find so many copies of this one on the remainder table. Tartt's prose is beautiful, but the complete absence of plot here leaves it past saving.
