There were a lot of things I didn't like about this book, but this is a book that rewards effort, and patience, and I finally learned to appreciate it - but never love it. After all these hours spent listening l feel like I'm saying goodbye to a friend. Or an acquaintance.
Recommended for fans of A Brief History of Seven Killings. It's a different kind of book, but requires the same dedication from the reader.

This may be the best Vietnam book I've ever read (and I've read several). The trippy sweep of story and language seems appropriate. And unlike other Vietnam novels, this one dares to be epic, and succeeds! If Pynchon and Robert Stone had decided to write a book together, it might look like this.

I read somewhere around 100-125 books a year, finishing all but a handful -- unfortunately, this National Book Award-winner falls into that handful. After reading and hearing a number of glowing reviews about the book, I decided to give it a try since I have a passing interest in fiction about the Vietnam War.
