This was my last Ann Patchett fiction to read, so I'm sad they are over.
It's probably good I ended on this one because it was a bit of a disappointment. I knew going in that the plot was "forty-year old woman married gay best friend" (my second in a row with that same basic plot line – see review for Until the Real Thing Comes Along).

I really wasn't that impressed by this book. The plot was odd, and just wasn't very engaging. I read this on "auto-pilot"...kept on reading to get through it rather than actually savoring every bit in enjoyment. This was the first of Ann Patchett's novels that I have read- it wasn't that I didn't like the writing it was the plot that I found dull. I am looking forward to reading "State of Wonder" as so many people loved this one of hers!

It's also wonderful that the denouement appears to head towards one of those unbearable women's-empowerment endings, but instead veers away at the last second to something far more realistic and affecting.
