I'm not going to be so pretentious as to let on that an old podunk like me could add anything of value to the volumes of analytical reviews that have been published regarding this work; just let me say that it lived up to all of my expectations and I am now a Faulkner fan. A word of caution to anyone reading the Folio Society edition: read the foreword last! It contains some plot-spoilers that you may want to be wary of.

I had to read this in college and bailed on it about half way through. More recently I went back and read the whole thing. I appreciated it much more, but it still didn't make me a real Faulkner fan.

I know as a Mississippian, I am supposed to appreciate and love Faulkner, but I just didn't like this book. I respected the story-telling, the tragic characters and their journey; but I only kept reading it because I felt I needed to. Faulkner is definitely a master, just not my type.
