I think part of the reason this book felt so ho-hum for me is that it followed a re-read of one of my all-time favorites, Lonesome Dove. Still, though, I think it would have earned a 3.5 at best.
The beginning started out very promising. I was quickly drawn into the setting, which felt extremely authentic throughout. I liked the main character from the start and could identify with her easily. I also enjoyed her son and many of the secondary characters, most of whom were servants in the novel.
