I listened to this driving between Phoenix and Vegas and could not wait for the return trip to finish listening. Because I didn’t know much about this tragedy I was completely enthralled, but I would recommend this to anyone even if you are more familiar with this incident. There is a lot to learn and the injustice of what happened to the Captain following the rescue is disgusting and makes you realize that powerful entities have always done what they can to deflect blame.

Naturally I request books from the library and a ton come at once! I started with this one and have not been disappointed--4 chapters in and it's the type nonfiction I love: reads like a novel.

I polished off this book in almost one sitting. I knew very little about the USS Indianapolis and found everything about the tragedy deeply compelling. I cried more than once over the experience of the men in the sea for 4-5 days and their subsequent rescue. The totality of the tragedy is staggering and I am left with a deep, abiding gratitude for all the men who defended America in WWII.

A gut-wrenching story--horrible for those who died, the survivors and the rescuers. Cpt. McVay's story is esp. sad.
I was surprised and disappointed that obvious errors didn't cause the tragedy--I was hoping for someone to blame. Mistakes were made, but on the whole, people did their jobs the best they could. The Indy and its crew encountered one bad break after another. ...more
