• It is obvious that the author understands/knows his subject and the location – interesting history tidbits about Texas and the “luring” of whites to this area to be a buffer against the Indian tribes

Where to begin? This book is heavily researched and well written and chronicles a compelling time of US history in great detail. I can see why it won a Pulitzer prize, but it is also obvious that it was written in 2010. There are dozens of passages that were extremely insensitive & hard to get through; almost DNFed multiple times. Though the story kept me going and I’m glad I finished it but I will stick to #ownvoices histories for awhile.
