3.5 stars. Great parts of this book read like non-fiction, so the parts that begged belief kinda sat wrong with me. An enjoyable, quick read, I chose this for a reading challenge bc my husband enjoyed it when he was ten (and wanted to run away from home, as most of us have, from time to time). George made this a believable (for the most part) prospect. I enjoyed the way the main character adapted so well to his surroundings. This is the stuff my dreams were made of as a kid; escaping to the wild, living off the land and - possibly more than anything else - befriending a hawk that I could call my own! (My dreams as an adult aren’t so terribly different…)

My sister raved about this book. My niece raved about this book. I now see why.
Sam decides he is tired of living with his big family in a tiny New York City apartment and he ups and leaves for a family farm in the wild. Amazingly, he is able to find food and water and shelter for himself and to keep himself alive for months and months, even during the snowiest days of winter. And, even more amazingly, his parents are fine with this.
Very good book.
