For something that was published in 1890, this is timeless. Action-packed with vivid descriptions and a non-linear narration leading to a twist.
This one has had me thinking about it for days.it is deliciously sneaky and worth a re-read. Wow! Recommend.
I first read this short story between the ages of 8 and 12, and still remember it as one of the best (if not the best) short stories I've ever read.
Haven't re-read it since--maybe I'd change my mind about it being the best if I did. No plans to re-read anytime soon. :) ...more

Very powerful and effective short story -- decades after I read it, I still remember the major plot points and the twist at the end.
I can see why this is Bierce's best known short story. Excellent.
