So I knew before reading this book (novella really), that it had been made into a movie and was a classic. It's a typical noir story from the 1930s or 40s. I didn't really like the book until about halfway through, then I couldn't put it down, because of all the twists and turns.

This is one that has such badness in it that you can't put it down. Read for 1,001 books to read before you die. Even if you have seen the movie, read the book.

Written in 1934 this short classic novel garnered lots of publicity for its mixture of sexuality and violence. The book was banned in Boston when it was originally published. Today, this book reads like a standard crime novel, fast paced, original and creative. See the full review on my blog at
