I have seen the excellent Wes Anderson adaptation and perhaps that helped flavor my enjoyment. The Fox family might be the only functional family Dahl has ever created, and I adored them. This was cute enough, and the audiobook was quite well done. Chris O'Dowd did a great job with different voices, AND he's a wonderful singer. Plus there were sound effects throughout, which gave this the feel of an old-time radio play, which was perfect since I read this to fulfill the 2018 Popsugar reading challenge category: "book that is also a play or musical." (Of course this was also turned into a play, which is why I chose it.) But beyond all that, I was neither here nor there about this ...more

Children will love this story of an underdog that gets the best of three bullies. I still like it better than the recent movie, which seems aimed more at the hipster audience instead of kids.

Jan 30, 2018 - Reading this for school-age chapter book read-aloud at the library. The kids and their parents are all loving it! I don't usually do voices when reading aloud, but it felt really natural to use a thick southern accent for the three farmers and the kids just ate it up. ...more
