This was my first Kate Morton novel but it certainly won't be my last. The multilayered plot ties present-day (or almost - 2011) with the years of World War II. Sixteen year old Laurel Nicholson, hiding in a treehouse, sees her mother (very uncharacteristically, and with a baby on her hip) stab a stranger to death in their front lane. Years later, at the end of her mother's life, she seeks to uncover her mother's wartime secrets and understand exactly why this happened.

When she is 16 years old Laurel Nicolson witnesses her mother Dorothy commit a crime. Now that Dorothy is close to dying Laurel investigates her mothers past to try to figure out why the crime was committed. The book alternates between Laurel's search in 2011 and Dorothy's past during World War II.
