I wasn’t really sure what I thought about this book for most of the time I was reading it. I didn’t love some of the main characters and I couldn’t even guess at solving the mysteries. My only hypothesis would not have been very satisfying. The actual explanation is masterful! Kate Morton is so clever!

When she is 16 years old Laurel Nicolson witnesses her mother Dorothy commit a crime. Now that Dorothy is close to dying Laurel investigates her mothers past to try to figure out why the crime was committed. The book alternates between Laurel's search in 2011 and Dorothy's past during World War II. This is almost a guilty-pleasure book: you could sink into it and go along for the ride. I thought it was great until just over half way when I decided I didn't like Dolly, and then decided that the book could have been edited to remove much of what happened in the next quarter. The ending was worth it, the dual timelines never confusing and overall an enjoyable relaxing read.
