John Steinbeck was a master of character development. He took us deep inside a group of people and showed us their worst faults, secrets and shortcomings. Now we know what they were thinking. We know their hopes, their insecurities, and things we wish we didn't know.

Half the story took place at Rebel Corners, California - a semi-fictional place with a restaurant and auto repair business. He changed a lot of place names, but I found Rebel Corners on the map. It was at one time named Confederate C

This is an excellent Steinbeck book about day-to-day life between average people and the exasperation of being stuck somewhere in life and the urge to just run away. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I love John Steinbeck.
