I almost didn't make it through this book. My completion of it comes down to simply not hating it passionately enough to quit halfway through. It was 250 pages too long, and in those 250 pages everything I loved about it started to grate on me. It was like trudging through a giant pool of thick molasses. The sterotypes, the cliches... boring and mildly offensive? Sign me up for the rest of the series!

If you appreciate good writing for writing sake, this book is for you. Jan Karon is a wonderful writer when it comes to descriptions and characterizations, but the story line is rather slow paced. The story is wholesome and leaves you feeling good, but it just wasn't captivating enough to get me to jump up and read the other 3 or 4 books in the series. I'll get to them eventually, but for now I think I need something more exciting. ...more
