I read this book to my firstborn 5 years ago and held on to it to read to my second. This middle grade historical fiction takes place during the lost year - the year following the 1957 Little Rock Nine integration - when Little Rock closed all of its schools to more than 3,600 student to avoid integration. (The football programs kept running though.) This story makes an excellent read aloud. Two thumbs up.

2014 review:

Thoroughly enjoyed this. It reminded me of the type of book I loved to read when I was an pre/early teen. The historical context felt fairly factual and I could believe the point of view of the main character. The author did a good job of balancing the need to present the violence and difficult issues of the day without losing the focus of how the young girls, their families and community were affected by it.
