Lippman makes her city live and breathe as a character unto itself - she paints a loving picture of a fading beauty in twilight. But more than that, she uses the basic mystery structure to explore bigger ideas about the nature of politics and corruption and asks the highly salient question of when working together crosses the line into a favor-trading swap meet. A fine series that only gets better.
