It's possible I would have liked this less if I had seen more of The Wire, but I thought this was excellent. To call this crime or detective fiction seems misleading - this is more a story about the various people impacted by a random murder. Understated but evocative, serious and at times funny, Lush Life moves at a perfect pace without resorting to cheap CSI-like suspense. The victim's father does seem to outstay his welcome in the story, but I think that's the point.

A gritty, urban crime, police novel set on the lower east side of Manhattan where urban hipsters co-exist with project kids rendered soul-less by broken families, poverty,and gangs. Lush Life reads like the screenplay for a television series. I appreciated how the back-story of each character was revealed in small fragments that the reader had to put together, as if over the course of a tv season.
