Lucky isn’t. That is, Lucky has not had much luck. Her mother died. Her father never wanted a child. Her guardian is Brigitte, her father’s ex-wife sent from France to take care of Lucky, and Lucky fears Brigitte is tired of caring for her. Lucky senses her life needs more and she finds some comfort by listening in to sad stories told by members of an AA group, though she cannot seem to find her own higher power.

My book group was supposed to read an award-winning book for this month's meeting. I tried to get into a book written for adults, but it just didn't work. I guess I chose the wrong book for me. I grabbed this one because it wasn't as long, and time was running short. I decided almost immediately, that this would not be a book that I would read aloud to my 7 yo son. At least not this year. Not my favorite Newbery. I found the voice of the narrator unrealistic and slightly annoying.
