The fact that the history of this country is at its heart a story of stolen land is way too easy for many of us to ignore. Read this. Read this at the same time as the other book I'm reading, if you really want to be angry.

This first Toni Morrison book that I have loved and understood. Well understood may be not be entirely correct since Morrison writing is somewhat difficult for me at times. Nonetheless, I would recommend this book to an average reader, it was entertaining, historically accurate and thought provoking. I couldn't put it down. I may need to go back and reread some of her other books I read in my youth. Or maybe not, I don't think I could read the Bluest Eye again.

Excellent, but not her best work. Brilliantly ties together the experiences of various oppressed/marginalized groups in late 17th century America and parades the sort of jaw-dropping poetic prose that Toni Morrison devotees expect (and demand!). Lacks however the kick-to-the-stomach (in a good way) moments of Sula and Beloved. And certain developments concerning the Sorrow character are a tad absurd.

I love Toni Morrison's writing style. I agree with Ann, that it provided an interesting historical perspective of slavery and indentured servitude. I don't think I have ever read a book that dealt with slavery in the United States before it was a well established insitution with so many laws governing people and their rights. It provided an interesting perspective. I also loved all voices of the different characters of the novel.

Every book Toni Morrison writes is a 5. It's been many years since I've read her, and it was an incredible antidote to the pain of this week to immerse myself in the brilliance of one of our most brilliant. A Mercy is striking, lyrical, and painful. It forced me to slow down to understand and savor.
