Four Gilded Age novellas by Wharton. "The Old Maid" was especially touching. All the hallmark themes of Wharton are in place -- social repression, ambition, complex interpersonal relationships, the need to keep up appearances. But there's also her wonderful rendering of how people feel. She's one of my favorite writers. Readers who have only tackled her longer novels such as Age of Innocence or Ethan Frome will find she's capable of compressing the same emotional punch into the short story and n ...more
