Four Gilded Age novellas by Wharton. "The Old Maid" was especially touching. All the hallmark themes of Wharton are in place -- social repression, ambition, complex interpersonal relationships, the need to keep up appearances. But there's also her wonderful rendering of how people feel. She's one of my favorite writers.
